Anticipating Joomla 1.6 9 Months, 1 Week ago Karma: 0
As we move closer to the launch I have made it a point to getting as far away as I can from Legacy Mode Extensions, and getting as close as I can to the latest stable version of Joomla!

For all of you that have not heard this seemingly old news, Joomla! has announced that they are going to be releasing a new version, very soon.

With this new version of Joomla! some things are going to change. I don't want to get too detailed on these changes, as they were "ideas" and in the web development world, some of those "ideas" may not make it into the release due to time constraints or conflicts with other items.

We do know that one of their primary objectives was to bring better "Access Control". Joomla! 1.5 failed miserably with "Access Control" and many extension providers tried to "extend" into "Access Control" but none (in my own opinion) were suitable extensions. They were either too highly priced for the average consumer, or they were too early into development with multiple issues.

We also know that there will is not supposed to be support for Legacy Mode anymore, as we are going into a new era of extensions.

There was talk about an automatic upgrade procedure, much like is used with Wordpress, enabling live updates through use of your Joomla! admin panel..many legacy mode extensions are just too outdated, and it would be much more easier and efficient to drop the support and move to supporting the 1.5 Native Extension support..

Let's hope that with the release of Joomla! 1.6 we don't have a massive meltdown during upgrade...
